IMO Regulations Driving Change
IMO’s Energy Efficiency Ship Index and Carbon Intensity Indicator are going to be published soon and the ship owners and operators are trying their best to find a solution to counter the carbon dioxide emission.
Innovation by Breg Propulsion
A Swedish propeller manufacturer, Breg propulsion has redesigned propellers on existing ships claiming an overall 22% on fuel savings.
Breg propulsion was asked to investigate the possibility of optimizing the propulsion system on a container vessel, the Indian Express.
Case Study: The Indian Express Vessel
The ship was built in 2008, propelled with a controlled pitch propeller originally manufactured by ZF.
Vessel length: 485-foot
Deadweight tonnage: 13,760 dwt
Capacity: up to 1,118 TEU
Operational regions: Mediterranean and Persian Gulf
Simulation and Redesign Results
Advanced simulation tools were used to develop a new propeller geometry, which modeling showed would achieve superior performance.
New blades tailored for operations improved efficiency significantly.
At 12 knots, the new blades achieved up to 50% higher efficiency than the old ones.
Overall, the vessel is expected to save 22% fuel and lower emissions beyond IMO’s 2026 goals.
